Professor Barry Jones is a prominent former Australian politician. He was an MP for Melbourne in the Victorian Legislative Assembly (1972–77) and an MP of the Commonwealth Parliament (1977–1998). He was the Ministers for Science (1983–90), Prices and Consumer Affairs (1987), Small Business (1987–90) and Customs (1988–90) . He became National President of the ALP (1992–2000; 2005–06).
Professor Barry Jones was a Visiting Fellow Commoner at Trinity College, Cambridge (2000–01), and he is the only person to have been elected as a Fellow of all four Australian learned academies. He was awarded an AO in 1993, promoted to AC in 2014. He was named by the National Trust in 1998 as one of Australia’s 100 Living National Treasures. He chaired the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority (2000–04; 2005–12).
